What are Ice Wells?

A renovation project caught my eye on Arch Daily—the restoration of snow wells in Sierra Espuña, Murcia, Spain. I had never heard of these structures before. These historic structures are tall domes made of stone. The dome structures are actually tops to the wells beneath them. The wells were used to store and pack snow that could later be sold to locals and was even exported to Ibiza and Northern Africa. Most of these wells were built at the beginning of the 18th Century.
