RENOVATIONS
The Designform team began the project with a comprehensive program validation that led to the complete demolition and re-design of the existing undergraduate chemistry labs.
The 22,631-square-foot project includes General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biological, Analytical / Physical teaching laboratories with support space and a Computational Chemistry lab. The design team worked closely with the department’s faculty and administration to incorporate the latest teaching and research methodologies as well as new equipment into the design.
Common areas are designed to facilitate student interaction and offer views into the labs for visitors and prospective students. During construction, the mechanical system was re-designed to connect to the UAB campus chilled water system while maintaining an active system for the first and second floors.

Other systems modifications included fume hoods, acid waste, new laboratory casework, ambient lighting and audio / visual equipment.
