EASTERN HEALTH CENER

The New Eastern Health Center was designed as an icon to signify Jefferson County Department of Health’s efforts to provide quality public healthcare in Birmingham. The JCDH mission involved a facility that would exemplify the ideals of their campaign “A New Day in Public Health”, and through its design, enhance occupant comfort while preserving the environment.

Designform provided facility programming, architectural design and documentation, MEPFP engineering, structural engineering and civil engineering for this 45,000-square-foot health center located on West Boulevard in Jefferson County, Alabama. The new facility is constructed of steel frame, concrete, stone and pre-cast veneer with a standing seam metal roof.

The facility houses eight separate departments that are accessible from a centralized lobby space: Adult & Family Planning, Dental, Maternity, Nutrition, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, and WIC. The use of natural light is an important aspect of creating a warm, comfortable environment for both staff and patients alike. Clerestory and high-glass windows strategically placed on interior walls allow light to penetrate inwards throughout rooms and hallways. Lighting controls are used to reduce the amount of energy consumed during operational hours.
